(Special thanks to ) Recommended Podcasts: Note that these podcasts are a mix of serial killers and general true crime. Oh I've so got you covered, you beautiful internet person! Looking these up is practically my hobby!
The best ones aren't about the actual documentaries so much as they are about the true stories (although I find the best ones don't have recreations). The two I'd put forth as the most entertaining on Youtube are and Garavito killed over a hundred children in Colombia. Probably more than 200.
We have no idea. Thankfully we caught him, and the resulting story paints a fascinating image of good old fashioned detective work in a disadvantaged country. You'll gain new respect for the people who very much sacrifice their own lives to hunt these predators. The Lake and Ng (pronounced 'eeng') story starts with a bizarre shoplifting incident where an unkempt man was arrested and an unknown Asian male was seen fleeing the area. A detective left the interview room for a moment and when he came back, the man was convulsing on the floor.
He had taken a cyanide capsule and was brain dead within the hour. Soon it was discovered the man's car belonged to a dead guy, and the story just gets bigger and more frightening from there. It's an odyssey of horror, full of twists, forbidding evil, and a creepy woman named 'Cricket.' One of my favorite serial killer stories of all time. There's also Serial killers generally have an outward persona of an upstanding, if fairly ordinary person. Unremarkable would be the word I'd use, and usually socially invisible. They often don't have impressive careers or many close relationships.
Well, Russell Williams did. He was the commander in charge of also known as He was also an accomplished pilot, flying high-level diplomats, a prime minister or two, and the queen of fucking England. And the whole time he was burglarizing homes, stealing womens' underwear, committing rapes, and finally killing two women. When the Canadian police searched his home, they found over 300 pairs of womens' underwear, which he liked to pose for personal photos in.
He also had a very close personal friend who was devastated by the news. You can really just type 'serial killer documentaries' into Youtube and go nuts, but these are definitely worth singling out. Also it's worth mentioning that pretty much any documentary about Gary Ridgway, aka The Green River Killer is fascinating. BTK too, if that fucks your duck, especially ones made before he was caught. Holmes if you never want to sleep again. Anthony Sowell was a real piece of shit. Aileen Wuornos is the most terrifying woman I've ever seen and a very big anomaly as far as typical serial killer profiles go.
Lonnie David Franklin had a weird amount of power over his community. Charles Cullen is the most haunting man of all time, and the thought that if Dean Corll's own teenage accomplice hadn't shot him dead we may have never known about him is disturbing. Ed Kemper is the most self-aware serial killer I've ever seen.
His attitude seems to be, 'I'm a serial killer. I don't feel that what I'm doing is wrong, and that's incredibly strange and bad. I can't keep doing this.' He seems to have logically known that his perception was distorted. It makes sense he turned himself in and asked for the death penalty (although that was probably just for lenience).
He was basically Dexter. He seems to have a soul, but tell that to the victims' families.
There are great docs on all these people. Happy hunting!
